Luxembourg seller guide

How to sell a car with outstanding finance

An active monthly payment does not by itself show whether a vehicle can be sold freely. The agreement may involve retained title, leasing, security or an early-repayment process. Clarify the legal and financial position before accepting an offer.

Key points

  • ✓Read the agreement and request a dated settlement statement from the finance provider.
  • ✓Do not promise handover until ownership and release have been clarified.
  • ✓Document who pays the balance, to whom, and at what stage.

Identify the type of finance

Distinguish car finance, a personal loan, leasing and hire purchase. Check the name on the documents, ownership clauses, early-repayment terms and possible charges. If you are not the legal owner, you cannot arrange the sale as though you alone own the car.

Request the exact settlement amount

Obtain a dated statement showing the remaining capital, fees, validity period, payment details and confirmation procedure. The figure may change as payments fall due. Do not estimate it simply by adding the remaining monthly instalments.

Compare the offer with the balance

If the offer is below the settlement amount, establish how the shortfall will be covered before release. If it is higher, define how the finance provider will be paid and when the remainder reaches the seller. The buyer or garage must know that an external step conditions final availability.

Secure the release and evidence

Ask which document confirms repayment and the end of any retention, registration or obligation. Wait for the necessary confirmations before handover. Avoid informal arrangements in which a buyer merely takes over the monthly payments without the finance provider's written agreement.

Present the case to a garage

State from the outset that finance exists without publishing an agreement number. Provide the settlement statement and provider details later through an authorized channel. A clear file lets a garage decide whether it can handle the process, but Autofocus does not provide finance or legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell a car before the loan ends?

It depends on the agreement and vehicle ownership. Ask the finance provider for written settlement and release conditions before arranging a sale.

What if the offer is below the finance balance?

The seller will generally need to cover the difference or agree another solution with the provider before release is possible.

Can a buyer take over my monthly payments?

Never assume an informal transfer is valid. Any takeover must be expressly approved and documented by the finance provider.
