Safe payment when selling a car: how to avoid fraud
The risk is not limited to non-payment. False transfer confirmations, overpayment refunds, fictional transporters and identity misuse all create artificial urgency. A simple, consistent process protects the seller better than a last-minute judgement call.
Identify the buyer and payer
Use an identity consistent with the contract and clarify why somebody else would make the payment. A late change of name, bank account or country should pause the transaction until explained. Limit document copies to what is necessary and never expose them in a public advert.
What to verify for a bank transfer
Agree the receiving account and payment reference in advance. Check your own banking application or contact your bank: a PDF, screenshot, text message or email supplied by the buyer does not prove that funds are finally available. Account for bank opening times, limits and interbank delays when arranging handover.
Recognize common fraud patterns
Be wary of a buyer who never sees the vehicle, appoints an unknown transporter, overpays and requests a refund, or asks the seller to advance a fee. The Grand Ducal Police describes fraudulent vehicle sales involving deposits and overseas transport charges.
Deposits and reservations
If the parties use a deposit, record its amount, purpose, cancellation conditions, deadline and remaining balance. Avoid ambiguous wording. For a substantial amount or unusual arrangement, obtain professional advice before accepting or returning funds.
Use a fixed handover protocol
Sign a contract matching the real payment, confirm the funds, record the date, time and mileage, and only then hand over the keys and agreed items. Complete the withdrawal-from-circulation and insurance steps afterwards. Autofocus neither receives nor secures the vehicle purchase price.
Frequently asked questions
Is a transfer receipt enough?
No. Check the credit in your own account and ask your bank for confirmation before handover if anything is unclear.
What should I do if the buyer overpays?
Do not refund anything under pressure. Contact your bank, verify the origin and purpose of the funds, and pause the sale.
Does Autofocus provide escrow?
No. Autofocus does not hold funds and is not a payment or escrow service.
